Now That Benny Hinn Has Confessed, What Next?

It’s been all over the social media that pastor Benny Hinn came out to state his disgust for the prosperity gospel he had been preaching for over thirty years.
During the sermon today, the pastor at the church I attended this Sunday referred to Pastor Benny Hinn’s confession. He said he didn’t know what had come over Pastor Hinn. He said that prosperity was biblical and nothing Pastor Hinn said would change that. He didn’t fail to throw one or two bible verses in the mix to show that Pastor Hinn was wrong saying that prosperity was wrong.
I also had a talk on Facebook with a friend who stated categorically that Pastor Hinn had confessed being wrong only on a certain aspect of the prosperity doctrine. Hence he agreed that that forcing money out of people’s hand was a wrong practice but still asserted that prosperity teaching overall was still biblical. The teaching had been abused but was still biblical as God takes pleasure in the prosperity of his children.
Many years ago, Pastor William Kumuyi of the Deeper Life Bible Church held and taught that modern appliances such as radio and television set were of the world and using them made the believers carnal and unspiritual. After discovering that radio and television were tools he could use to expand his ministry, Pastor Kumuyi rescinded on his former teachings and taught his followers to do ditto. Many people expected the church members to receive the change with excitement. But that was not to be at least for the majority. They instead opposed their pastor’s change of heart and teaching stating that a devil had corrupted his mind leading him to abandon what was otherwise a godly teaching.
Many people celebrated when they hear Benny Hinn’s confession. They anticipated the change his repentance would bring to Christendom. Benny Hinn has millions of followers. He holds crusades worldwide yearly and his followers would do anything he tells them. Pastor Hinn also holds hundreds if not thousands of pastors and ministers who closely follow and emulate his ministry. Hence the celebrations at the prospective converts that would follow Pastor Benny’s change of heart and message. The assumption being that his multitude of followers would follow him and also reject the prosperity gospel.
Based on past experience, one of three things may happen. As I stated in a previous article, Benny Hinn may likely return to his vomit.
The first thing is that Benny Hinn may retract his confession and return to once again teaching the prosperity false doctrine.  Remember that this is not the first time he has criticized the prosperity only to go back preaching and practicing it. Benny Hinn’s nephew, Costi Hinn, stated in a tweet that he was moved by his uncle’s statement. He however added that it was too early to celebrate as only time and fruits would tell whether Benny Hinn’s repentance was genuine.
The second thing is that Pastor Benny could stay true to his confession and indeed stay away from teaching the prosperity doctrine and as well influence and lead his many followers away from this false belief.
The third thing is that Benny Hinn would stand firm on his new found faith but face a resistance and persecution from his followers, allies and fellow former prosperity preachers.
One or two or even all three of these plausible things might happen but still I think that to expect a massive move away from the prosperity in Christendom would be too much a target. I believe that pastor Hinn will suffer a lot of opposition, loose thousands of followers and have many fellow ministers persecute him because of his new found theology.
Apostle Paul was a chief and leader among the Judaisers. He singlehandedly led the greatest Christian persecution recorded in the Holy Bible. We would have expected his conversion to lead many of his fellow Jews to Christianity but that wasn’t to be. Instead, they persecuted him and sought to destroy him. They even sent people to gentile cities in an attempt to take his life. After stoning and leaving him for dead at least once, their final attempt was only thwarted by Roman soldiers who rescued him from their hands.
As for Benny Hinn’s case, we would have to wait to see what happens.
