Praise And Worship Time
I was just thinking. Do you know the meaning of praise? What about the meaning of worship?
Well in the typical services I have ever attended, a praise song is known as a fast song and a worship song is a slow song. So when the pastor asks the singer to lead the congregation in praise, everybody knows he means the singer should sing fast paced songs. When the song leader says" Let us worship the Lord, he means let us sing slow songs. But is praise equal to fast paced singing and worship to slow paced singing?
I wouldn't like to bog you by going into the Hebrew and Greek meaning of these words. It suffices to say that when Jesus said that the Father is looking for those who worship in Spirit and in truth, he didn't mean the father was looking for people who sing slow Bible songs. And when the Bible through its many commands enjoins us to praise the Lord, it doesnt mean we should sing fast paced song.
Now if praise is not a fast paced song and worship is not a slow paced song, what are they? What is their true meaning?
The word praise simply means to eulogize, to magnify, to exalt, to lift up, to exult, to elevate, to celebrate someone, and in this case God our creator.
Praise can be done with or without music. It can be done with fast paced or slow paced music. The speed of the rhythm does not in any way affect the meaning of the praise.
For example, when we sing the popular song,'' You are the mighty God, the great I am, hallelujah, hallelujah'', what are we doing? Are we praising or worshiping? Of course, we are praising our God. We are extolling and telling him how great he is. Now if the drummer increases the pace of the music what would we have with the same lyrics? Yes, it is still praise. What if we stopped singing and just said the words of the song out loud to the Lord? You guessed right, we are still praising the Lord.
Okay, what about this other song that we sing all the time, ''Jehovah you are the most high''? Is it praise or a worship song? It is a praise song. And whether the pace of the music in fast, slow or even if we said the words without the music, we would still be praising God.
The society is very fun of redefining the meaning of words all the time. Don't let it change the meaning of God's word to you. The true meaning of Bible words can be defined only in the context of the Bible. To praise is to extol and proclaim the greatness of our God. We can do that accompanied with slow or fast paced music; we can do it without music or even in our minds.
Recently I posted some thoughts on praise and worship as defined in many churches today and took my time to talk more about praise. As we saw, praise is more than singing. It has nothing to do with how fast or slow a song is. We could praise God with singing or without it.
Just as I did last time, I am not going to bog you down with Hebrew and Greek words. The word worship comes from a root word that means to literally bow down, to submit, to pay obeisance, to crush as under the power of. In a sentence of two, I could say that worship is like a dome that covers every activity a believer involves in as commanded by the word of God as he or she attempts to please God or do the Will of God. Worship touches on praise, preaching, work, house chores obeying your boss or parents. I got you there right? You never knew obeying your boss and your parents could be considered worship. The Bible say somewhere that we should do everything in the name of the Lord, giving thanks to his name. So as you can see, worship does not end with singing a song and it does not even begin there. True worship begins with one submitting his life to Jesus and going on to obeying his commandments and loving him with our whole heart, mind and soul, and loving our neighbor as ourselves.
