PASTOR CLAIMS THE APOSTLES WERE WRONG TO REJECT WORSHIP FROM MEN

And on the following day they entered Caesarea. Cornelius was expecting them and had called together his relatives and close friends. When Peter entered, Cornelius met him and fell down at his feet and worshiped him. But Peter lifted him up, saying, “Stand up; I too am a man.”

Chris Oyakhilome, a charismatic preacher in Nigeria recently claimed that the apostles were wrong for rejecting worship from men and not teaching them that they also had the ability to become gods if they “believed in Jesus.”

I want you to understand the graduation of revelation. I want you to understand, at a certain periodthe apostles thought they were humans. They said so, they thought so when they tried to stop others from almost worshiping them. They said “look, [unintelligible] we’re humans like you.” No, that’s where they were wrong. Their spirit was right, but their answer was wrong. Their human nature was right, but their answer was wrong. They were supposed to say to them, “don’t worship us, this is the message we have brought to you, that you also have the potential to become gods if you believe in Jesus.”

Matthew 16:13-18 Jesus asked his disciples two questions when he was with them in the region of Caesarea. The first question was directed to the people outside his circle, hence he said, “Who do men say that I am?”  After they answered him, he redirected the question this time to his inner circle. “Who do you think I the son of man am?” Jesus asked his closest followers. This interaction shows us a certain number of things. The world has always been divided into two poles; the believers and the non-believers; those on the outside of Jesus’ influence and those on the inside of his influence; those that are close to him and those that aren’t. The scriptures use the expressions Jews and gentiles to adequately show this dichotomy. There are those that are in Christ and there are those that aren’t.
